Why Sui TVL Moves Differently Than Other L1s

When analysts cite Sui's TVL as a direct sign of ecosystem health, they often miss an important point: TVL on Sui behaves differently than on more mature Layer 1 blockchains. Some movements can look like new capital inflows when they are not, while real growth can sometimes be hidden. It is like reading a river's water level during a rainstorm — the number is real, but without knowing whether it is rainwater or snowmelt, you cannot be certain whether the river is actually rising or just temporarily flooded.

Three Reasons Sui TVL Is Different

1. Protocol Concentration. Sui's TVL is concentrated in a small number of protocols, mainly Suilend, NAVI, and Cetus. On Ethereum, TVL is spread across hundreds of protocols with deep stablecoin liquidity. Because of this concentration, a strong increase or decrease in just one or two protocols can significantly move the overall TVL number. When TVL rises quickly, it is useful to check whether the growth is coming from one protocol or from broader activity across the ecosystem.

2. Price-Denominated Collateral. A large share of collateral on Sui is denominated in SUI or SUI-linked assets. This creates a direct connection between the price of SUI and the reported TVL. When the SUI price increases, TVL rises in dollar terms even if no new capital has entered the ecosystem. The same effect works in reverse during price declines. Sui's stablecoin market has been growing, but it is still relatively small compared to more established chains.

When the SUI price increases, TVL rises in dollar terms even if no new capital has entered the ecosystem.

3. Mercenary Capital. Early-stage ecosystems like Sui often attract liquidity through incentive programs. When a protocol offers high yields or rewards, TVL can increase rapidly. When those incentives end or decrease, much of that capital tends to leave. This liquidity is real while it lasts, but it is usually temporary. As a result, incentive-driven TVL can look similar to organic growth in the short term.

What to Actually Watch

TVL is still a useful metric on Sui, but it needs proper context. The key questions to ask are:

For better analysis, track TVL breakdowns on DefiLlama, check protocol-level data on TokenTerminal, and review activity on the Sui Explorer.

TVL remains one of the main signals in onchain analysis. On Sui, however, the number should be read carefully. By understanding these structural differences, traders and investors can get a clearer picture of the ecosystem's actual progress and capital flows.
